Tema: Actions to discipline Mr. Vidal-Quadras

Dear Mr. Schulze,

As a Catalan and a European, I want to express my great concern because of the statements made yesterday (28 September 2012) by Sr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a Vice President of the European Parliament, against the Catalans’ right to decide their national future. He has called for a Spanish army-led action against Catalonia, its citizens and its institutions if we democratically express our will to secede from Spain.

In my view, Mr Alejo Vidal-Quadras’ publicly stated opinion (I can send you the recording if you like) is improper for a democratically-minded person, and they strongly remind me of the behaviour of Franco’s pro-Fascist military dictatorship. Furthermore, his words bring institutions in which he has a post of responsibility – including the European Parliament – into disrepute.

I hope you will take the proper steps to discipline Mr. Vidal-Quadras and prevent future similar non-democratic attitudes being publicly voiced by other members of the European Parliament.

Just as important, in my view, is this: since other influential politicians both inside and outside the government, journalists and opinion leaders in Spain are making similar threats, and even claim that the European Union would expel ‘forever more’ any independent Catalonia from the EU and the Eurozone, I would greatly appreciate a clear EP Resolution both to condemn the threatened use of means (political, legal, econòmic and even armed force) to prevent state-less nations from exercising several of the most basic democratic and human rights, freedom of expression and the right of self-determination; and also to reassure the respective EU citizens that their new nationhood would not mean their being automatically expelled from the EU. Were the latter to be our case it would be a particularly severe contradiction, for it is well known that in few parts of Europe has the European spirit been more active than it has in Catalonia.

Yours sincerely,

(la vostra signatura)
